When business owners come to us for an illuminated storefront sign, the choice usually comes down to two options: channel letters or a cabinet (box) sign. Both light up and both work — but they look, cost, and age differently. Here’s how to decide.
What are channel letters?
Channel letters are individual, three-dimensional letters and shapes, each fabricated and lit on its own (usually with LEDs). They’re mounted directly to your building, so your name appears to float on the wall in a clean, premium way.
What is a cabinet sign?
A cabinet — or box — sign houses your graphics inside a single enclosed frame with a printed or routed face that lights up from within. The whole rectangle is one unit, which makes it simple and cost-effective.
How they compare
- Look: channel letters feel high-end and modern; cabinets read as classic and bold
- Cost: cabinet signs are usually more affordable up front
- Flexibility: a cabinet face is easy to update or reface later
- Detail: channel letters show off logos and custom shapes beautifully
- Tenant rules: many newer shopping centers now require channel letters
Which should you choose?
If you want the most upscale look — or your landlord requires it — channel letters are the way to go. If budget is the priority, or you want one bright, simple panel that’s easy to reface, a cabinet sign is a smart pick.
