Sign Materials 101: Acrylic, Aluminum, Vinyl, and More

Sign materials being fabricated at the Sign Go shop in Houston

When you order a sign, the material is one of the biggest decisions — it drives the look, the lifespan, and the price. The good news: you do not need to be an expert. Here is a plain-English tour of the materials we use most, and where each one shines.

Acrylic

Acrylic is a rigid, glass-like plastic that delivers a clean, modern, high-end look. It comes clear, frosted, or in colors, and pairs beautifully with standoff mounts for lobby logos and reception signs. It is a go-to for interior branding where appearance matters most.

Aluminum

Aluminum is the workhorse of exterior signage — lightweight, rust-resistant, and tough enough for the Houston heat and humidity. It is used for everything from post-and-panel and monument sign faces to the returns on channel letters. Brushed or painted finishes give it a premium, durable feel.

Aluminum composite (Dibond)

Aluminum composite panels — two thin aluminum sheets bonded around a plastic core — are flat, rigid, and weatherproof. They are perfect for storefront panels, wall signs, and any large flat sign that needs to stay crisp outdoors for years.

PVC and foam board

Rigid PVC is a versatile, budget-friendly plastic for interior signs, lobby letters, and short-to-medium-term outdoor use. Foam board is its lightweight cousin, ideal for indoor displays and event signage where weight matters more than durability.

HDU (high-density urethane)

HDU is a dense foam that can be carved, sandblasted, and painted to mimic wood without rotting or warping. It is the material behind upscale, dimensional, carved-look signs for restaurants, communities, and traditional brands.

Vinyl

Vinyl is not a rigid substrate but a printed or cut film applied to other surfaces — windows, walls, panels, vehicles, and floors. It is the fastest, most affordable way to add full-color graphics and lettering, and it comes in finishes for both short-term promos and long-term branding.
